Ghee Sankranti celebrated with fervor in Uttarakhand

Ghee Sankranti is being celebrated in Uttarakhand today i.e. on 17th August. This is a famous folk festival of Uttarakhand. Fruits and seasonal vegetables were offered to ancestors and gods. On the arrival of Bhado month, this ghee (clarified butter) preparation from farming and animal husbandry is considered a special festival.

In Uttarakhand, there is a practice of celebrating every single day of the month i.e. Sankranti as a folk festival. Sankranti of the month of Bhadrapada (Bhado), also known as Singh Sankranti. On this day the Sun enters Leo, hence it is also called Singh Sankranti. Ghee festival was celebrated with pomp in the state. People make sweet dishes at home. Worship was done in the temples in the morning. Fruits, vegetables and dishes were offered, to the gods and ancestors.

Ghee Tayar is a festival celebrated after sowing the sprouted crops. This is one such folk festival associated with agriculture and animal husbandry. This is the time when the crops grown during the rainy season start sprouting. That’s why farmers celebrate by wishing for a good harvest.
