Andy Murray to return to Grand Slam tennis in 2020

Former World No.1 Great Britain tennis player Andy Murray will return to the Grand Slam from the Australian Open in January next year. The official Twitter handle of the Australian Open confirmed this on Tuesday. “Andy Murray will make a comeback at the Australia Open in 2020, that is confirmed.” Significantly, the Australian Open Murray played in 2019 was believed to be the last Grand Slam as he mentioned his plan to retire due to hip injury problem. He underwent surgery after the Grand Slam. However, after this he was successful in making a comeback on the ATP Tour.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray’s singles rankings have fallen drastically. He is currently ranked number 289 in the world rankings while he was 503rd a week ago. Murray, 32, entered the second round by defeating Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Londero at the Shanghai Masters on Monday. He reached the quarter-finals in Beijing last week. Australian Open organizers said the former number one player has confirmed to play at the first Grand Slam of the year. Murray would be using his protected ranking of world number 2 to avoid playing in the qualifiers of the first Grand Slam of the year.

The three time Grand Slam champion lost to Italian Fabio Fognini in a thrilling 3 set encounter lasting over 3 hours at the Shanghai Masters.
