Kerala offers to help Chennai during ongoing water crisis

Tamil Nadu capital Chennai is facing an acute shortage of drinking water. Here all the surrounding reservoirs have dried up, groundwater is fast declining. Drinking water has become a matter of crisis. Kerala also extended its hand to help the neighboring state but there was also a confusion in it. The first news came that the Government of Kerala, which has offered 20 lakh liters of water to Tamil Nadu, has been rejected by the state government. But later the matter was resolved and a statement was issued.

In fact, on Thursday, the Kerala government had said that they offered to water 20 lakh liters of drinking water to Tamil Nadu. But news spread that the state government rejected it there. Later the Tamil Nadu government Minister SP Velumani tweeted that his government has not turned down the offer. Rather they are just thinking about this.

He wrote that the Minister of Kerala CM called the Secretary of Tamil Nadu CM and offered the help. But the Chief Minister is still out for medical treatment, due to this, he asked to talk to the concerned minister. Later, Velumani told the Kerala government that he will talk to the Chief Minister and tell the government’s decision, he welcomes this offer.

Tamil Nadu government has said in its statement that “daily requirement of Chennai is 525 MLD of water, but the offer of Kerala was only 2 MLD. While we can manage so much water ourselves, if they give 2 MLD of water daily, then it will be better for us.”

Significantly, due to water in Chennai there are many problems. The government has had to change the timing of schools, hotels have had to stop lunch, whereas the offices have asked their employees to work from home.

On Thursday it was the first rain in the season in Chennai, although this did not remove the concern of drinking water. Fishes are also dying due to lack of water in Coimbatore.
