Liz Truss steps down as UK PM after 44 days in office

British Prime Minister Liz Truss has resigned. She took over the post of PM only 44 days ago. Liz Truss will remain PM until a successor is chosen. This was the shortest tenure of a Prime Minister of Britain.

The shortest serving British Prime Minister before Liz Truss was George Canning, who was in office for only 119 days in 1827. However, his tenure was cut short not by political events, but by his untimely death at the age of 57.

The people of Britain and the leaders of the Conservative Party were not happy with the work of Liz Truss. According to the Daily Mail report, a recent survey by YouGov revealed that four out of five Conservative Party workers think the PM is doing a bad job and 55 percent believe she should leave, while only 38 Percent had supported her stay.

What did Liz Truss say?

Speaking to reporters outside 10 Downing Street, Truss admitted that she had not delivered on her promises, as she had lost the confidence of her party. She said, ‘I did not live up to the mandate. I am resigning as the leader of the Conservative Party.’

In her six weeks as prime minister, Truss was forced to abandon almost all of her policy programs, as it triggered the bond market route and its approval rating, and the collapse of Conservative party. To spur the economy, the government of Liz Truss announced a package of 45 billion pounds of tax cuts on 23 September, the most since 1972. But the announcement caused turmoil in the financial markets and the British pound fell to a record low and the government’s borrowing cost rose sharply.
