Kumaon University suffers Rs 18 crore loss per year after handing private exams to Open University

The financial needs of Kumaun University have become almost dependent on the mercy of the state government. The university is incurring a loss of about 18 crore annually after handing over private examinations to the Open university three years ago. Due to limited economic resources, the situation is that if the state government does not give the funds, then the professors-employees will not get salaries.

Question on the autonomy of Kumaon University

The autonomy of Kumaon University, established in 1973, is under threat. This is because the financial needs of the university are almost at the mercy of the state government. In the current year, the university needs 72 crores in the head of salary etc., but the state government has released 64.50 crores in the salary head, eight crores in the state aid. Apart from this, 82 lakhs have been received in the current financial year under construction.

VC advocated for the budget

Last time, six crores were received under the state Aid, this time Vice Chancellor Prof. KS Rana went to the Raj Bhavan as well as the Minister of State for Higher Education and the officials of the government and advocated the budget, the result was that the university’s worries about salary were solved. But when this situation worsens again, it cannot be said.

Impact on research project

The university’s poor financial condition is also impacting research projects. Institutions like UGC are now issuing more guidelines to improve the quality of education and research, university operations rather than the budget. Along with development works, repair and purchase of equipment is also being affected. At the same time, Vice Chancellor Prof. KS Rana said that there is support from the government to improve the financial condition of Kumaon University. Efforts are on for better financial conditions.
