Maria Sharapova announces retirement from tennis

Former number one and five-time Grand Slam champion Russian woman player Maria Sharapova has announced her retirement from tennis on Wednesday. Sharapova has also stated the reason for taking her retirement where she said, “My body had become a hindrance.” Maria Sharapova won her first Grand Slam title as Wimbledon in 2004 at the age of just 17 and also completed her career slam by winning the French Open in 2012.

 

In the year 2004, Sharapova won the Wimbledon by defeating then world number-1 Serena Williams in the match. She had become the poster girl for all the advertising companies after thar breakthrough performance. After the year 2012, she also won the French Open in 2014. After which she was also successful in winning the US Open in 2006 and the Australian Open in 2008.

In 2016, Sharapova faced a 15 month ban for doping. She returned to tennis in the month of April 2017. Sharapova’s return to tennis was also not very special and she also struggled with her shoulder injury due to which her rankings plummeted. Her last tournament was this year’s Australian Open where she was shown the exit door in the first round.
