Reduced power demand for 9 minutes had no adverse impact on grid

On the appeal of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the electricity grid was not affected due to the shutdown of bulbs and tube lights of the houses across the country for 9 minutes on 9 pm on Sunday night. There was no problem due to the sudden reduction in demand from the government and power companies and a plan already prepared to deal with the situation of increase.

On Friday, the Prime Minister in his message against the Coronavirus had appealed to the citizens to ‘challenge the darkness’ in his message to turn off the power for 9 minutes at 9pm on Sunday and use a diya, candle, or mobile flashlight.

On this, Energy Minister R.K. K. Singh said, “The reduction in power supply (ramp down) and then the increase (ramp up) work went on very smoothly. The officials managed it well. Senior officials along with me, Power Secretary and POSOCO CMD National Monitoring. The situation was being monitored by the Center personally. I would like to congratulate NLDC (National Load Dispatch Center), RLDC (Regional Load Dispatch Center) and SLDC (State Load Dispatch Center) about dealing well with the situation of the engineers. “

According to the Energy Minister, power consumption was reduced from 1,17,000 MW to 85,300 MW in about four-five minutes. This was more than the potential reduction of 1,20,000 MW.

According to the ministry, the 110 MW increase (ramp up) was smooth after the light was switched off. There was no electrical disturbance or shutdown incident anywhere.

He appreciated the power generation companies NTPC and NHPC. It was feared that on the appeal of the Prime Minister, the shutdown of the bulbs, tube lights in the houses from 9 pm to the next 9 minutes would adversely affect the power grid and could affect the power system. But no power failures were reported once the electricity demand was restored.
