Srinagar to become 9th Municipal Corporation in Uttarakhand

The state government has engaged in the exercise of upgradation of some bodies with the award of new civic bodies. Under this, Nagar Palika Parishad, Srinagar will be upgraded to Municipal Corporation, while Nagar Panchayat Bhagwanpur is being prepared to made Nagar Palika Parishad. The boundary of Municipal Corporation Rishikesh is also being expanded. Apart from this, nine new Nagar Panchayats will be set up in Udham Singh Nagar, Pauri, Haridwar and Bageshwar districts. When new bodies come into existence, their total number in the state will increase to 101. At present, there are eight municipal corporations, 41 municipal councils and 43 nagar panchayats in the state.

Demand for giving municipal status to areas that have taken the shape of cities in different districts has been rising for a long time. Now the government is going to take fast steps in this direction. On Friday, Urban Development Minister Madan Kaushik brainstormed with officials regarding the formation of new civic bodies and the upgradation and expansion of boundaries. The District Magistrates of the respective districts also joined the meeting through video conferencing. On this occasion, the proposal to upgrade the Nagar Palika Parishad Srinagar to the Municipal Corporation was discussed intensively. It was said that the city of Srinagar, which lies on the Chardham Yatra route, has special significance.

Given the expansion of passenger amenities, the Srinagar Municipality needs to be upgraded. For this, the area up to Kirtinagar can be included in it. In the meeting, to increase the scope of Municipal Corporation Rishikesh, emphasis was laid on including surrounding areas. In Haridwar district, it was agreed to upgrade the Nagar Panchayat Bhagwanpur.

Government spokesman and Urban Development Minister Madan Kaushik said that with the expansion of facilities in urban areas, the government is serious about the formation of new municipal bodies. Workout is going on in this regard. The Chief Minister will soon announce the formation of new bodies, upgradation etc.
