Govt working to eradicate poverty by 2020: Harish Rawat

Chief Minister Harish Rawat yesterday said the state government was committed to eradicating poverty by 2020. He was speaking with mediapersons at the annual function of Balganga Graduate College at Sendul village in the Ghansali Assembly segment in Tehri Garhwal district.

He said a member of every family would be provided employment by 2022. He also announced increase in pension for widows and elderly persons from Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000. “The area in the Ghansali Assembly constituency is abundant in herbs and full of natural beauty. It can be turned into a hub of herbal medicinal plant production and tourism development, he said.

Rawat unveiled statues of Indramani Badoni and other leaders from Ghansali who struggled for the separate state of Uttarakhand.

He said the construction of the Bal Ganga Graduate College building would be completed in two phases and funds for the first phase has been released. He announced the widening of two roads in the Bhilangana block and upgrade of Junior High School at Khawada to High School.

The Chief Minister stressed preservation of the traditional art and craft practices as it was indicative of the culture of the state.

The conditions in the district would change in the next 10 years due to various development works. Food courts on the lines of Indira Amma canteens would be opened to promote local dishes among tourists, he said.

Parents should play an active role to ensure that their children receive quality education, he added.
