Avinash Sable creates history, wins silver in 3000m steeple chase with a national record

Star athlete Avinash Sable gave India a silver medal in the 3000m steeple chase event on Saturday at the Commonwealth Games-2022 with a new national record. Avinash won the medal taking the time of 8:11.20. Avinash, who hails from Beed district of Maharashtra, created a personal best as well as a national record. Avinash is the first Indian athlete to win a Commonwealth Games silver in this event which has been dominated by athletes from Kenya. The magnitude of Avinash’s feat today can be gauged from the fact that Kenya has won the 1-2-3 positions in the event from 1998.

26-year-old Abraham Kibivot of Kenya won the gold medal. He took 8:11.15 while Amos Serem (8:16.83) of Kenya got the bronze medal.

This is India’s fourth medal in track and field in these games released in Birmingham. Prior to this, Priyanka Goswami (10000m Race Walk, Silver), Murali Sreeshankar (Silver in Long Jump) and Tejaswin Shankar (Bronze in High Jump) have won medals in the track and field events of the Commonwealth Games 2022.
