Deep pressure forms over Bay of Bengal; cyclone alert in Odisha, Andhra
The Indian Meteorological Department on Saturday issued a cyclonic storm warning for Odisha and Andhra Pradesh after the formation of a deep pressure area in the northeastern and adjoining east-central region of the Bay of Bengal. A deep depression formed 510 km east-southeast of Gopalpur and 590 km east of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday morning. The IMD said, ‘It is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm in the next 12 hours. It is likely to move towards North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha coasts between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur around Kalingapatnam by the evening of 26 September.’
Meteorologists said that due to its effect, light to moderate rain is expected at most places and heavy rains at some places over Odisha and Coastal Andhra Pradesh on Saturday. On Sunday also, light to moderate rain at most places and heavy to very heavy rain at some places is likely over South Odisha and North Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Heavy rain may also occur in the northern hinterlands of Odisha, Telangana and Chhattisgarh on Sunday. Similarly, IMD has forecast light to moderate rain at most places and heavy at few places over Odisha and Telangana for September 27. Also, there is a possibility of heavy rain at some places of Coastal West Bengal.
It has also predicted strong wind speed reaching 70 kmph in the northwest and west-central region of the Bay of Bengal. High waves will occur in the sea during the next three days and fishermen in Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh have been asked not to venture into the sea over east-central and northeastern Bay of Bengal from September 25 to 27.
The IMD has also predicted inundation of roads and water logging in low-lying areas due to torrential rains in coastal Andhra Pradesh on September 26 and Odisha and Chhattisgarh in the next two days. The Special Relief Commissioner of Odisha has asked all the District Collectors to remain alert in view of the weather forecast.
