UN closely monitoring CAA repercussion in India

Deputy spokesman of the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said that the global body is closely monitoring the potential consequences of the Citizenship Amendment Act of India. The spokesman emphasized that the United Nations has its own fundamental principles, including the rights included in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Hopefully they will be retained.

According to the Citizenship Act, refugees from Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who came to India by 31 December 2014 will be given Indian citizenship due to religious persecution in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The Citizenship (Amendment) Act was passed by the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. Earlier on Monday, it was passed by the Lok Sabha.

The Act states that refugees from these six communities will be given Indian citizenship after five years of residence in India, whereas earlier it was required to stay for 11 years. “We are aware that the lower and upper houses of the Indian Parliament have passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and we have publicly expressed concerns,” Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman of the General Secretary, Guterres, said during a press conference on Thursday.
