Over 90 dead in Sierra Leone oil tanker explosion

Officials and eyewitnesses in the African country of Sierra Leone said on Saturday that over 90 people were killed and several others were seriously injured in an oil tanker explosion near the capital.

Dangerous explosion on Friday night

The explosion occurred late Friday night after a bus collided with a tanker in Wellington, a suburb east of Freetown. 92 bodies are reported to have been brought to the Connaught Hospital morgue till Saturday morning. About 30 victims with severe burns are not expected to survive.

Sierra Leone President expressed grief over the accident

Meanwhile, President Julius Maada Bio, who was in Scotland to attend the UN climate talks on Saturday, expressed grief over the incident. He said, ‘My deepest sympathies to the families who have lost their loved ones and those who have been burnt. And others will work tirelessly in view of the emergency. “We are all deeply saddened by this national tragedy, and this is indeed a difficult time for our country”.
