France lends support to India’s bid in UN Security Council

After launching a proposal to ban Masood Azhar, the terrorist organization of Jaish-e-Mohammad, France has now reiterated the support of India’s permanent membership in the UN Security Council. It said that the expansion of the Security Council is necessary. India has long been seeking reforms in the United Nations Security Council in collaboration with Brazil, Germany and Japan, and insists that these countries are entitled to become permanent members of this influential global institution.

France is a permanent member of the 15-member Security Council, and a permanent member of the veto. France, which assumed the presidency of the council this month, had last month submitted a proposal to the Security Council to declare Masood Azhar to be a global terrorist, with the United States and Britain.

Reiterating his support for the permanent membership of India, Germany and Japan in the Security Council, France said that the expansion in both permanent and non-permanent categories in this powerful body will be the first major part of its reform approach. France’s permanent representative Francois Delattre told reporters in the United States, “We want an extension in both the permanent and non-permanent categories of the Security Council, along with the equitable representation of India, Brazil, Germany, Japan and Africa. This will be the first important step towards its improvement.
