Reservation in promotion: Uttarakhand govt accedes to protesting employees

The government has finally lifted the ban on promotion considering the striking employees. With this, the mandate of September 5, 2012 has now come into effect, in which orders were issued to do departmental promotion, eliminating reservation from promotion. With the removal of ban on promotion by the government, orders have been issued regarding within a week. This will benefit about 30 thousand employees. After the issuance of these orders, the employees have ended the indefinite strike.

General-OBC category employees in Uttarakhand were protesting to implement the decision given by the Supreme Court regarding reservation in promotion and to remove the ban imposed in the promotion by the state government. The work was severely affected due to the employees’ strike. In view of the increasing staff pressure, the Chief Secretary on Tuesday called the striking employees for talks. During this time it was agreed to lift the ban on promotions, although the employees were talking about agreeing to other demands as well, but the Chief Secretary only agreed to give consent regarding removal of reservation on promotion only.

After this, a delegation of employees reached the Chief Minister’s office to meet the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister’s secretary Radhika Jha interacted with the employees here. She assured that the order to remove the ban in promotion would be issued immediately. During the period of the strike, no action will be taken on the employees and this period of leave will be granted.

After this, the government issued the order. The order said that in the order of the Supreme Court’s decision, the government has abolished the reservation on promotion on 11 September 2019. With this, the mandate of September 5, 2012 has come in charge. Accordingly, further action will be taken. After the order was issued, the employees thanked the government and announced the end of the strike.
