Mid term polls to be held in Nepal as President dissolves parliament

Nepal President Bidya Devi Bhandari has dissolved the parliament of Nepal amidst ongoing political upheavals in the country. Nepal will now again hold elections for the lower house of parliament. New dates have also been announced for this mid-term election. There will be elections in Nepal in two phases. The first phase will be held on 12 and the second phase will be held on 19 November. According to information received from the President’s Office, the President has rejected the claims of both Sher Bahadur Deuba and KP Sharma Oli for the post of Prime Minister.

This decision to dissolve the Parliament in Nepal has been taken under Article 76 (7) of the Constitution. Actually, there was a lot of upheaval in the political developments in Nepal on Thursday. Both Nepal’s opposition parties and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli expressed their willingness to prove their majority. However, Oli had to prove his majority within 30 days to remain Prime Minister.

By Thursday, Oli, who expressed reluctance to seek a trust vote, reached the opposition party’s president to claim it again. Nepal’s opposition parties had submitted a letter of support of 149 MPs to the President, claiming to form the government. Opposition parties wanted to form the government under the leadership of Sher Bahadur Deuba, the president of the National Congress. President Bidya Devi Bhandari gave the opposition time till five o’clock on Friday to present the claim to form the government. Meanwhile, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli also suddenly reached the President and claimed to have the support of 153 MPs. He claimed to have the support of 121 members of his party as well as 32 Janata Samajwadi Party-Nepal MPs.
