Roger Federer announces retirement from competitive tennis

Tennis great Roger Federer who was the first male player to win 20 Grand Slam finals has announced his retirement from competitive tennis. Tennis fans have not been able to fully recover from the announcement of Serena Williams’s retirement, that they have now suffered another major setback. The 41 year old shared the news on his social media handle in which the Swiss super star said that the upcoming Laver Cup in London would be his final event.

Federer was ranked the number 1 player in the world for 310 weeks including a record run of 237 consecutive weeks at the top spot. He is one of the few select players to have won all the 4 Grand Slams atleast once.

Since turning pro in 1998, Roger has won Wimbledon a record 8 times, he also holds the record of most US Open titles with 5 triumphs in New York. He is the only player with 5+ titles at 3 different tournaments (Australian Open, Wimbledon, US Open).

On 15 August last year, Federer underwent another knee surgery after losing in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon hoping for a return in 2022. Fans of the former world number 1 were eagerly anticipating another comeback from the 19 time ATP fan favorite superstar like in 2017, but it was not to be.

Federer has thanked his fans and rival players in this journey. Federer said that at the age of 41 he thinks it is time to leave it. Fedor said, ‘I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1500 matches in 24 years.. Tennis has treated me more generously than ever before and now I have to recognize when this is the end of my competitive career.
