Uttarakhand weather update: Weather could change from January 8

The chill has increased in Uttarakhand. On Thursday, the minimum temperature was recorded at 4.6 degrees Celsius in Dehradun, which was one degree below normal. Whereas, the minimum temperature was 4.5 degrees for the last two days as well. However, due to sunshine in the afternoon, the maximum temperature remained above normal i.e. 21.9 degrees. On the other hand, the Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for fog in the plains for Friday.

According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of rain and snowfall in the hill districts especially Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Pithoragarh from January 8. After this, there can be relief from fog in the plains. But, on Friday the fog can cause trouble. During this, there will be a condition of cold day. On January 8 and 9, there may be snowfall in areas with a height of more than three thousand meters.

Fog has impacted daily life of people. On Thursday, people in Roorkee, Haridwar, US Nagar faced problems in movement as well as health related problems. According to the Meteorological Department, Roorkee recorded a maximum temperature of 13 degrees Celsius, six notches below normal. In Pantnagar, the mercury reached nine degrees below normal i.e. 9.8 degrees. The temperature was relatively higher in the hilly areas. The maximum temperature was recorded at 12.5 degrees Celsius in Nainital and 13.5 degrees Celsius in Mussoorie.

What is cold wave?

In the plains, the minimum temperature falls to 10 degrees Celsius or below, while in the hilly areas, it is considered a cold wave when the mercury falls to zero degrees Celsius or below. If the temperature is less than normal by 4.5 degree to 6.4 degree Celsius, then this condition will be called cold wave. More or less the same situation is observed in winters also.
