A standing committee of Parliament has recommended reinstating the concession in rail fare to senior citizens before the Corona pandemic. Indian Railways used to give this concession to all senior citizens in all classes of trains including Mail, Express, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto which was discontinued from March 20, 2020. Indian Railways used to give 40 per cent concession in fare to male passengers above the age of sixty years.

While women passengers of 58 years or above were given 50 per cent concession in fare. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways, headed by BJP MP Radha Mohan Singh, presented its report on both the floor of Parliament on Monday. This committee had made the same recommendation in its previous report as well.
The committee considered providing exemption

The committee has demanded a grant for this. The Parliamentary Committee on Railways in its recommendation said that according to the information received from the Railways, the country has now recovered from the situation of Covid and the growth in the income of this national transport has become normal. In the 12th action taken report (17th Lok Sabha) regarding passenger reservation system, the committee has also expressed its desire to consider providing pre-Covid relaxation to senior citizens.

Also, at least they should be provided this facility in sleeper class and 3A class so that the needy citizens can be helped. That is why the committee has reiterated its request to give concession in fare to senior citizens in sleeper class and 3A class. However, the Railways says that there is currently no plan to restore this exemption immediately. They say that already 50-55 percent discount in fare is being given to all railway passengers.
