Lumpy virus cases again on the rise in Uttarakhand

Lumpy disease has once again threatens to wreck havoc on cattle’s in Uttarakhand. Within four days, more than three thousand animals have fallen prey to the disease in the hilly districts. In four districts, 32 animals have also died due to this.

To prevent the disease, the government has banned the transportation of animals from one district to another within the state and from outside states for one month. Along with this, leave and deputation of officers and employees of Animal Husbandry Department has been banned till further orders.

Animal Husbandry Minister Saurabh Bahuguna said in a press conference in the assembly hall on Wednesday that lumpy disease is spreading in the districts falling in Kumaon division. In Almora, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Champawat, Pithoragarh, Nainital, Rudraprayag districts, 3131 animals have been affected by the disease. Of these, 1669 diseased animals have also been cured. 32 animals have died so far. The recovery rate from the disease in the state is 53.3 percent and the death rate is 1.02 percent.

Animal Husbandry Minister said that vaccination of animals is being done to prevent them from diseases. Till May 9, 7.43 lakh animals have been vaccinated in the state. Within the next 10 days, 100 percent vaccination of animals will be done in disease affected areas. Additional teams have been deployed to vaccinate in the affected areas of Garhwal division as well.

The department currently has 3.24 lakh vaccine doses available. The department has issued guidelines to all the districts for the prevention of the disease. They have urged all the cattle rearers to take special care of cleanliness in the cowshed. The disease spreads from one animal to another through mosquitoes and flies.

In 2022, 921 animals died due to lumpy disease

Lumpy disease had knocked for the first time in Uttarakhand in 2022. At that time more than 36 thousand animals were found diseased in Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital. Of these, 921 animals died. This time the disease is spreading in the mountainous areas.
