India became the fifth largest stock market in the world

The Indian stock market has recently once again overtaken France to become the fifth largest stock market in the world. After the report of American firm Hindenburg (24 January 2023), it had slipped to sixth place during January this year due to heavy selling in Adani Group’s shares. But on the basis of the recovery in the shares of Adani Group and the buying done by foreign investors, the Indian stock market has managed to regain its lost position.

1 to 3 lakh crore journey

On May 28, 2007, the Indian stock market achieved a market cap of $1 trillion (lakh crore) i.e. about Rs 82 lakh crore for the first time. But the market had to wait for the next 10 years to touch the market cap of $ 2 lakh crore i.e. 164 lakh crore.

Finally, the wait ended on 16th May 2017, while it took just 4 years to jump from $2 lakh crore to $3 lakh crore i.e. Rs 246 lakh crore. On 24 May 2021, the Indian stock market touched a market cap of $3 trillion for the first time. Not only this, the number of investors in the stock market has also crossed 11 crores to reach 11.44 crores.
