Qualcomm announces the launch of Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 chipset

Qualcomm has announced the launch of the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 and W5 Gen 1 system-on-chips (SoC). This chip will power the next generation wearables. Qualcomm says that these new SoCs have been made using the 4nm process. They offer longer battery life, better user experience and the ability to create a sleek design as compared to last-generation wearables.

Qualcomm has confirmed that the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 wearables platforms will support Google’s Wear OS. Qualcomm said that wearables from Oppo and Mobvoi, which offer Snapdragon W5 and Snapdragon W5+ chipsets, will be the first to hit the market.

Features of Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1, W5+ Gen 1

As far as the features are concerned, the chipmaker says that its Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 and W5 Gen 1 wearable platforms offer 50 percent more battery life than the company’s Snapdragon Wear 4100+ platform. Apart from this, these SoCs offer twice the performance as compared to the older wearable platforms and provide immersive interactive experience, ultra-low power ambient experience, sensing health and fitness experience. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 and Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 also support features like deep sleep and hibernate low power mode, LTE standby, VoLTE, Bluetooth version 5.3 and Wi-Fi.

Wear OS Support

In terms of design, Qualcomm’s newly launched wearable platform will enable device makers to build smartwatches and fitness trackers that are up to 30 percent smaller and sleeker than existing devices. The company currently has 25 designs in the pipeline across all segments, which will use these chipsets. At the same time, the software wearable platform of Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 will support Google’s Wear OS.
