Scientists discover 222 million year old crater in Australia

Scientists have uncovered the mystery of the construction period of a crater made by the fall of a meteorite in the western region of Australia. In a new study, scientists have claimed that this crater was created about 222 million years ago. The study reported that the Yarrabuba crater is 2.2 billion years old. This means that it is 200 million years older than any known site on Earth.

This revelation raises the possibility that it would have had a tremendous impact on the Earth’s climate and the ‘Deep Freeze’ period would have ended. Scientists were convinced that the construction of Yarrabuba must have been done millions of years ago, but there was no accurate information about it because it is not easy to find the period of its construction. In the journal Nature Communication, researchers have written that because such sites are not properly maintained and their geological past is buried due to seismic events and erosion.

To find out the exact period of its formation, the team of researchers discovered and analyzed evidence of ‘shock recrystallization’ in the minerals on site. The meteorite in it alters the composition of materials such as zircon and monazite.
