UCC Expert committee met CM Dhami before submitting the draft report

The expert committee formed to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state met CM Pushkar Singh Dhami before submitting its draft report. After the UCC draft report is approved in the cabinet meeting tomorrow, it is expected to be presented in the Assembly on February 6.

With the submission of this report, Uttarakhand will take another important step towards becoming the first state in the country to implement UCC. To submit the draft report, the chairperson of the expert committee, Justice (Retd) Ranjana Prakash Desai and her team reached the Chief Sevak Sadan located at the Chief Minister’s residence.

Suggestions invited regarding UCC

During the 2022 assembly elections, Chief Minister Dhami had formed a committee under the chairmanship of Justice Desai to implement UCC. The Chief Minister extended the tenure of the committee thrice to prepare the draft. During this, the committee invited suggestions regarding UCC from the public on online and offline basis.

The expert committee formed sub-committees and discussed them with distinguished people of the society, social workers, religious leaders, saints and conscious citizens and took suggestions. The committee visited various areas of the state and took suggestions from the people in open meetings there. In this way the committee received about 2.5 lakh suggestions. They received many important suggestions in about thirty different meetings. The Committee also discussed UCC with the Central Law Commission. After this marathon exercise the committee prepared its draft.

The expert committee will submit its report on Friday. In the state cabinet meeting on February 3, the government will discuss the draft report of the UCC and approve the bill. After this, the UCC Bill will be tabled in the House during the Assembly session starting from February 5. It is likely to be brought in the House on February 6. After being passed by the House, it will be sent to the Governor for approval. This Act will become effective after the approval of the Governor. However, there are heated discussions in political circles about sending it to the President.
