US issues draft notice of additional tariff on Indian goods wef August 27

The United States of America has issued a formal notice to impose an additional 25 percent tariff on products imported from India. According to the information, this new tariff will come into effect from 12:01 pm on Wednesday, August 27, 2025. On this matter, the US said that this tariff is being imposed due to India buying oil from Russia.
The Trump administration said that India is continuously funding Moscow in the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia by buying oil from Russia. The US Department of Homeland Security has shared this information regarding the tariff. Earlier on July 30, US President Donald Trump had announced an additional 25 percent tariff on India, which has now been increased to 50 percent.
At the same time, the US has not included some sectors including semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and energy resources in it. The implementation of the new tariff can have a profound impact. Sectors like textiles, gems and jewellery, leather, chemicals and auto parts will be particularly affected by the implementation of this new tariff.
US President Trump had said in a post on Truth Social that ‘Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country.
Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE – ALL THINGS NOT GOOD! INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25 per cent, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST 1st. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER.’
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday maintained his stand firm ahead of the 50 percent US tariff on Indian goods that comes into effect from August 27 and said that his government will find a way out regardless of Washington’s economic pressure. At the same time, India’s Foreign Minister has given his reaction to the imposition of this tariff. The department has described the 50 percent tariff as unfair and unjust. The Foreign Ministry further said that India has always imported oil from Russia for its energy needs and national interests.
PM Modi, while addressing a public meeting in Gujarat on Monday, said that ‘India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, no matter how much pressure comes. We will bear it.’
