GST Collection Hits Record ₹2.43 Lakh Crore in April 2026
Gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections rose by 8.7 percent in April 2026, reaching a record level of approximately ₹2.43 lakh crore. This information was revealed by government data released on Friday.
Previously, the highest collection—exceeding ₹2.23 lakh crore—was recorded in April 2025. Gross revenue derived from domestic sales and purchases increased by 4.3 percent to stand at over ₹1.85 lakh crore, while GST collections from imports surged by a sharp 25.8 percent, reaching ₹57,580 crore.
In April, the amount of ‘refunds’ issued rose by 19.3 percent to ₹31,793 crore. After adjusting for refunds, net GST collections grew by 7.3 percent to approximately ₹2.11 lakh crore.
How GST Collections Reached a Record Level
It is reported that GST collections grew from approximately ₹1.67 lakh crore in April 2022 to ₹2.10 lakh crore in April 2024. Subsequently, in April 2025, collections surpassed the ₹2.23 lakh crore mark, reaching the current record level. Meanwhile, in April 2026, the annual growth rate slowed to 8.7 percent, down from 8.8 percent in March.
Although GST collections are reaching new highs in absolute terms, the momentum of growth has persisted. At the same time, the annual growth rate in April 2026 decelerated to 8.7 percent, compared to 8.8 percent in March.
This also suggests that while GST collections are reaching new absolute peaks, the pace of expansion—particularly that linked to consumption—may be slowing down, with import-based revenue playing a significant role in the recent gains.
