Dehradun’s Sunday market has been shifted; the market will now be held at this new location

The weekly Sunday market near Rangers Ground at Lansdowne Chowk in Dehradun has finally been shifted. The Sunday market will now be held on land belonging to Metro Rail Limited near the ISBT (Inter-State Bus Terminal). The main reason for shifting the Sunday market is the traffic congestion it caused in the city.

Following instructions from Dehradun District Magistrate Savin Bansal, the Sunday weekly market at Rangers Ground has been transferred to land owned by Metro Rail Limited near the ISBT. The DM ordered the transfer of the Sunday market, which had become a major cause of traffic congestion in Dehradun.

Several problems were caused by the Sunday market

Every Sunday, a market was set up at Rangers Ground, attracting a large number of shoppers. The influx of vehicles and haphazard parking led to traffic jams at Lansdowne Chowk, Darshan Lal Chowk, Buddha Chowk, Doon Hospital Chowk, and Cross Road intersection, as well as in the surrounding areas.

This caused inconvenience to the general public, as well as to patients, their families, and ambulance services traveling to and from Doon Medical College and Doon Hospital. Rangers Ground is located near Doon Hospital and several major roads, intersections, and offices in the city.

Consequently, the Sunday market significantly impacted traffic, directly affecting the sick, injured, and essential services. Therefore, considering the convenience of the elderly, children, and emergency services, the district administration took strict action and decided to shift the Sunday market.

Earlier, the Sunday Weekly Market Welfare Committee had requested that the Sunday market operating at Rangers Ground be shifted to another suitable location in the city. A meeting was convened to discuss this matter. After the discussion, DM Bansal, in the public interest, ordered a ban on the operation of the Sunday weekly market at Rangers Ground.
