Indiscriminate Firing in Dehradun Overtaking Dispute; Morning Walker Shot Dead

A violent incident stemming from a dispute over overtaking occurred this Monday morning in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. An innocent bystander paid the ultimate price for shots fired by the occupants of one car at another. A man out for his morning walk lost his life in the ensuing gunfire, which arose from a trivial altercation. The deceased was reported to be a retired Brigadier from the Indian Army. This incident has sent shockwaves through the police department.
A Fatal Confrontation Over Overtaking in Dehradun
On Monday morning, within the jurisdiction of the Rajpur Police Station in Dehradun, a minor dispute over overtaking escalated into a violent confrontation. An innocent passerby bore the tragic brunt of this incident, losing his life in the process. The dispute—which began near the Johrigaon, Malsi area in Dehradun over a refusal to yield the right of way between the occupants of two cars—culminated in an exchange of gunfire. A shot fired by the accused, intended to force the other car to stop, accidentally struck a man who was out for his morning walk. The victim succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
According to the police, the incident took place around 6:50 AM on Monday. The police control room received a report regarding gunfire near Johri village. Upon receiving this information, the entire police department was thrown into a state of alert. Senior officials were immediately apprised of the incident. The SSP of Dehradun, the SP (City), and the police team from the Rajpur Police Station rushed to the scene to inspect the site of the incident.
Preliminary investigations revealed that an altercation regarding overtaking had broken out between the drivers of a Delhi-registered Fortuner SUV and a Scorpio SUV on Mussoorie Road. In a matter of moments, this minor disagreement spiraled into a physical confrontation. It is alleged that the occupants of the Scorpio pursued the Fortuner and began firing at its tires with the specific intent of forcing the vehicle to come to a halt.
Bullet Fired by Occupants of a Scorpio Strikes Retired Army Officer Out for a Morning Walk
During the incident, retired Brigadier Mukesh Joshi, who was taking a morning walk along the roadside, was struck by a bullet. He was immediately rushed to the hospital in a wounded state, where he passed away while undergoing treatment. The retired Brigadier was 70 years old. This incident has created an atmosphere of panic in the area.
Bystanders present at the scene immediately took him to the hospital where he breathed his last while receiving treatment at the hospital. In the wake of this incident, while a wave of grief has swept through the retired army officer’s home, the local residents are seething with anger.
