Petrol pumps in Uttarakhand asked to follow ‘no helmet,no fuel’ policy

If two wheeler riders need petrol, they along with the pillion rider need to wear a helmet in the Himalayan state, otherwise the petrol pump staff may deny the request. The Uttarakhand transport department on Wednesday wrote to all 13 district magistrates and officials of food and civil supplies department to enforce the “No Helmet-No Petrol” formula at the petrol pumps.
While hearing a PIL filed by Abhijeet Loliyal on implementation of government orders making helmets mandatory and following provisions of Motor Vehicle Act, the High Court recently wrote to chief secretary, secretary transport and transport commissioner asking about the status of the implementation of the initiative to not give petrol to two-wheeler riders not wearing a helmet in the state.
On getting the High Court orders, the transport department has issued letters to the DMs and food and civil supplies department. The transport department would submit its reply with the High Court by July 12. Giving the information, Additional Transport Commissioner Sunita Singh said, “We wanted proper implementation of the order so we have written to the food and civil supplies department also. We have asked them to ensure that people coming to petrol pump without wearing a helmet are not given petrol.”
She maintained that the orders are to be followed with the immediate effect. “Not only this, we have planned several other initiatives too like asking the motor cycle agencies to sell helmets, so that a purchaser can buy the two-wheeler and the helmet at the same time,” added Singh.
Few weeks back, the transport department had passed orders making helmets compulsory for the pillion riders too. The traffic police too has organised an awareness camp in this regard. Despite the efforts the project remained a non-starter as only a handful of pillion riders are seen wearing helmet in the state capital.
“We have written to DMs and food and civil supplies department so that they can initiate action against any petrol pump owner found flouting the guidelines,” she added.
