Couple threatened with ‘Digital Arrest’ in Haridwar, lose ₹40 Lakh

Cyber ​​​​thugs cheated a retired senior draftsman from BHEL, resident of Shivalik Nagar, of about Rs 40 lakh by posing as fake CBI officers. By posing as a CBI officer and then a judge, the victim was threatened of digital arrest and sending his family to jail. For three days, the victim and his wife were threatened on video calls continuously.

According to the police, a 62-year-old man, retired from BHEL, complained that on the morning of June 9, a person in police uniform introduced himself as CBI officer in a WhatsApp call. He told that a SIM card was taken from his Aadhar card and used in extortion and hawala business. The victim was questioned online and given instructions through video calls. After this, another person called the victim’s wife and threatened her.

These people introduced themselves as judges on video calls and said that a case of money laundering has been registered against them. It is alleged that the scared couple broke their six FDs and transferred about Rs 40.15 lakh to two different accounts through RTGS. After discovering the fraud, the victim has registered a case with Ranipur Kotwali police who have started the investigation.
