West Bengal to be renamed ‘Bangla’; state assembly passes resolution
The name of West Bengal will now be Bangla. The state assembly passed this resolution on Thursday. The proposal will be sent to the Union Home Ministry. If the Home Ministry gives it a green signal, then the name of West Bengal will be changed to Bangla.
Earlier, the state government had passed the proposal to change the name on August 29, 2016 in the Assembly. In the proposal, the name of West Bengal was changed to ‘Bengal’ in English, ‘Bangla’ in Bengali and ‘Bengal’ in Hindi, but the Central Government had rejected this proposal.
The central government government had said that there can not be separate names in three different languages of the same state. The government had also suggested that the Mamta Banerjee government choose a name and decide on it. After that, the state government decided to change the name of West Bengal to ‘Bangla’. The proposal was presented in the assembly on Thursday. Earlier, on September 8 last year, a proposal was approved in the state cabinet meeting.
