Nainital’s Mall Road to become a ‘No Horn Zone’; new rules to come into effect from August 1
A ban on unnecessary honking is set to be imposed on the famous Mall Road in the Nainital district. The administration has decided to implement new rules in this regard, effective from August 1st. To raise public awareness prior to the implementation of these rules, an awareness campaign will be launched this week, and informational posters will be displayed at various locations.

This decision has been taken in compliance with the directives of the Uttarakhand High Court. During a meeting chaired by Divisional Commissioner and Secretary to the Chief Minister, Deepak Rawat, detailed discussions were held on making Nainital’s traffic system safer, more organized, and tourist-friendly. Senior police and administrative officials were also present at the meeting.
Tourists to enjoy a peaceful atmosphere
At the meeting, Divisional Commissioner Deepak Rawat remarked that Mall Road is the identity of Nainital, a place where tourists from across the country and abroad enjoy strolling in a peaceful environment. He noted that noise pollution caused by unnecessary honking detracts from the tourist experience. Consequently, instructions have been issued to the District Magistrate (DM) and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) to issue the necessary orders.
Area around the lake declared a ‘No-Parking Zone’
The administration has declared the entire area surrounding the lake—stretching from Tallital Danth to Hanumangarhi Bend—as a ‘No-Parking Zone.’ The objective is to ensure smooth traffic flow and alleviate the problem of traffic congestion on the road. Instructions were also issued to the Transport and Police departments to immediately halt the operation of government and private vehicles lacking valid fitness certificates. Such vehicles will be seized, and action will be taken in accordance with the law. Additionally, a joint drive will be launched to curb the illegal operation of private vehicles as taxis.
