Rishikesh–Karnaprayag Rail Project’s First Phase to Reach Byasi by June 2028
The first phase of the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail project is set to be completed by June 2028. In this initial phase, train operations will extend up to Byasi. The target is to extend the rail line to Karnaprayag by December 2029.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways reviewed the project’s progress. Officials from Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) briefed the committee on the work accomplished so far.
Project Includes 13 Stations
The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail project is of immense strategic importance, in addition to connecting the mountainous districts of the Garhwal division to the rest of the country’s rail network. The project comprises 13 stations.
Trains currently operate from the Virbhadra and Yoganagari railway stations in Rishikesh. Construction work has commenced on two stations—Shivpuri and Byasi. Preparations are underway to begin construction on the remaining stations following the completion of the tendering process. Track-laying work has also started.
Excavation of the tunnel between Dhalwala and Shivpuri is yet to be completed; this tunnel spans 10.8 km. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways reviewed the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail project on June 8 and 9. This committee reviews the functioning, budget, schemes, and passenger amenities of the Ministry of Railways.
