Greenland loses 11 billion tonnes of ice sheet in 1 day!

According to scientists, this past Thursday was the warmest day in Greenland, located in the North Atlantic Ocean. Due to this, 1100 million tonnes or 11 billion tonnes of ice sheet melted in just one day. It is being told that the sea level is expected to rise by 0.1 millimeter or 0.02 inch in a month. Scientists say that the molten portion was equivalent to more than 4 million Olympic sized swimming pool.

According to a report, ice sheets in Greenland melts in the summer. The process starts in the last days of May has started soon this time. It has been melting for the last four months.

Scientists say that July is the warmest this time. The glaciers are melting fast. The temperature is 22 degrees Celsius and over 12000 million tonnes of snow has eroded in just 24 hours. 197 billion tons of snow has melted in the month of July itself. This is equivalent to 80 million Olympic sized swimming pools. According to scientists, the possible melting rate this year is 6 to 7 billion tonnes, which is very high.

After Antartica, Greenland is the largest source of fresh water on Earth. 82% of the country is permanently covered in ice. If this icesheet were to melt alongwith Antartica then the sea level could rise by upto 65 meters having disastrous consequences on millions of people.
