Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson & Omar M. Yaghi awarded Chemistry Nobel Prize 2025

This year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Susumu Kitagawa (Japan), Richard Robson (Australia), and Omar M. Yaghi (United States). The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced this on Wednesday.

They created atoms with large voids, allowing gases and other chemicals to pass through them easily. These structures are called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). They form crystals with large voids.

These can be specifically designed to capture or store specific substances. They could be used to collect water from desert air, remove pollution, clean carbon dioxide, store toxic gases, or accelerate chemical reactions.

The winners will receive 11 million Swedish krona (₹10.3 crore), a gold medal, and a certificate. This prize money will be divided between the three. The awards will be presented in Stockholm on December 10.
