Rare Brain ‘eating’ Amoeba case reported in Florida

A new case of amoeba that destroyed human brain has come out of Florida in America. The Health Department of Florida has confirmed the infection with the amoeba named ‘Naegleria fowleri’, which causes fatal brain infection. The Health Department said that this amoeba of one cell can destroy a human’s brain.

This amoeba causes an infection in the brain called ‘primary amoebic meningoencephalitis’ (PAM), which works to destroy brain cells. According to the Health Department, in 1962, 37 cases were reported in the same place in the US.

Doctors have not given much information about this matter, but have advised to be alert to this deadly amoeba. Expert says that it can easily enter the human brain.

According to a CNN report, Naegleria is commonly found in fresh and warm water of lake, river and pond. The DOH warned that while being in such places one should be careful, especially when the water is warm.

According to DOH, the nose should not be exposed to water while swimming in water. This is the main gateway to the amoeba’s brain. If the temperature of swimming pool water is high, do not make the mistake of landing in it.

According to the Florida Health Department, there have been 143 cases of amoebae infected in the US between 1967 and 2017, out of which only four have survived. Between March and August, the temperature of the weather is high and then its danger increases.

Symptoms like headache, fever, nausea and vomiting are found in the patient when infected with Naegleria fowleri. Subsequent symptoms include stiff neck, seizures, altered mental status and coma. A person can also die within 1 to 8 days of showing symptoms.
