Yakub Menon to be hanged in Nagupur jail

Yakub Memon, the only person to be sentenced to death for the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts, will be hanged as scheduled on Thursday after he exhausted all his legal remedies and President Pranab Mukherjee too rejected his mercy plea on Wednesday.

Earlier during the day, President Pranab Mukherjee sent the fresh mercy petition of 1993 Mumbai-blast accused Yakub Memon — filed on Wednesday as a last ditch attempt to escape the gallows — to the home ministry.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra said there was no legal fallacy in issuance of the death warrant on April 30 or dismissal of his curative petition on July 21.

Security beefed up in Nagpur and Mumbai

Memon, who is scheduled to be hanged to death in Nagpur Jail on Thursday at 7am, All Deputy Commissioners, Additional Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners of Police have been deployed in sensitive areas in the city.Security has been tightened in Nagpur — Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ home city and also headquarters of the RSS — with preventive and prohibitory sections clamped around the jail precincts, and in Mumbai’s Mahim area where the Memon family resides.
Family members of Memon, including his wife and daughter, two brothers and other relatives are in Nagpur for a final meeting with him, and have sought permission to be present during the execution.
