Unexpected rains in March provide much needed relief for Naini lake

The early summer rains in Uttarakhand have ended the winter drought in the lake district. Rain has brought great relief in Nainital city. In the last five days, it rained three times more than what it used to rain in winter. It is considered a boon to curb forest fires that occur in summer.

Water level of Naini lake increased by about five inches

Due to several days of rain, the water level of Naini lake has increased by about five inches. Due to this the water level of the lake has reached five feet. Along with this, relief is being felt for the summer due to recharging of natural water sources. This year the winter was completely dry. The town received only 24 mm of rainfall from November to February.

Locals were most affected by the lack of rainfall. Here the water level of Naini lake dropped to 4.7 feet. According to the information received from the lake control room, 78 mm of rain was recorded here in the last five days and there was heavy hailstorm.

About three times more water has rained in the last five days than the winter rainfall from November to February. Irrigation Department Executive Engineer Anil Kumar Verma said that after the rain the water level of the lake has increased to five feet. Due to the recharge of the water source, the lake is getting water from the drains.

Relief from rain, hailstorm also caused damage

Farmers producing green vegetables, peas and spinach have got relief due to rain in March. But farmers have suffered losses due to heavy hailstorm in Nainital and some nearby areas. Along with his rabi crops, peach, plum, apricot and apple production and vegetable cultivation have suffered a lot due to hailstorm. Here the farmers producing cucumber, ridge gourd, bottle gourd and other vegetables have got relief due to the rains.
