Fire breaks out at Garjiya temple premises; many shops engulfed in flames

A day before Navratri, a sudden fire broke out in the premises of Garjiya Devi Temple in Ramnagar on Monday afternoon. There was a stampede among the devotees present there when about 25 thatched shops selling Prasad caught fire under the temple.

Shopkeepers and people who had come for obeisance saved their lives by climbing on the bridge. The fire is said to have caused a loss of more than Rs 10 lakh. The cause of the fire is believed to be burning incense or a piece of burning chunni from the temple above.

Treasurer of Shri Garjiyadevi Temple Committee and former Minister of State, Dr. Nishant Papanai said that the fire incident occurred at 2:07 pm. According to him, perhaps burning incense or a piece of burning chunni from the temple above fell on the thatched shop below.

As soon as this shop caught fire, nearby shopkeepers and devotees ran to extinguish the fire, but in the meantime all the shops caught fire one by one. The fire took a huge form due to the blowing wind in the afternoon. As the smoke and flames increased, there was a commotion among the devotees present there. People saved their lives by climbing the bridge.
