World Athletics Championships 2022: Neeraj Chopra wins Silver

India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra created history in Eugene, USA. He secured a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships on Sunday (24 July). He has become the first Indian male athlete to win a medal in the history of this tournament. He is also the first Indian to win a silver medal in this competition. India has won a medal in this competition after 19 years. Prior to this, veteran athlete Anju Bobby George had won a historic bronze medal in 2003. Neeraj won the silver in the fourth round with a javelin throw of 88.13 meters.

Neeraj continuously improved the performance

Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra failed in the first attempt. His first throw was declared a foul. Chopra then threw the javelin 82.39 meters in the second round. Neeraj’s rival Anderson Peters of Granada put pressure on Neeraj by throwing a javelin 90.21m in the first attempt and 90.46m in the second round. After this, Neeraj continuously improved his performance in the third and fourth rounds. He managed to throw 86.37 meters in the third round and 88.13 meters in the fourth round. Neeraj failed in the fifth round. Peters managed to win the gold medal with a javelin throw of 90.54 metres. Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic managed to win bronze with a score of 88.09.

Rohit Yadav, the second Indian player in this competition, finished 10th in the final. He was out after the third round. He threw 77.96 meters in the first round, 78.05 in the second round and 78.72 meters in the third round.
