Gas cylinder @ Rs 500: Congress spokesperson Gourav Vallabh explains economics behind it

With the Assembly Elections just round the corner political parties are leaving no stone unturned to reach out to the masses. In this context, the Congress party has highlighted one of the plight’s of the common man- rising prices of LPG cylinder. Cylinder under Rs 500 has been the party’s slogan for the upcoming polls. Professor, Gourav Vallabh explained how the party aims to achieve the price.

He said, the maths is pretty simple, the price of 1 LPG cylinder in Dehradun is currently Rs 919, which means the government will provide a subsidy of Rs 419 per cylinder. Now, assuming the average consumption of cylinders in 1 year by 1 family is 6.25 cylinders, it means that the government would have to bear Rs 2619 per family per year in LPG cylinder subsidy. As per the estimates of the party, there are 24 lakh families having gas connection in the state which equates to Rs 629 crore approximately. Which is just around 1.1% of the total budget (Rs 56000 crore) allocated to Uttarakhand. Questioning the government, he said can’t we bear just over 1% costs for our citizens?

After this explanation of how Congress will slash down the LPG prices, it is natural for the critics to scratch their heads for answers.

At the same time, without directly accusing any political party, the national spokesperson of the Congress said that the priority of the Congress party is not at all to promote illegal mining and do scams in the name of corona testing. He said that one of the main priorities of the Congress is to reduce the cost of LPG cylinder so that every family in Uttarakhand can get LPG at less than Rs 500.

However, this important issue raised by the Congress in the assembly elections and this initiative of the party for the common man is being praised everywhere. Now it has to be seen that how much effect this big claim and promise of Congress has on the assembly elections of Uttarakhand.
