UNSC votes to condemn Russia over Ukraine aggression; 141 nations in support, 35 abstain

The Russian attack on Ukraine continues for the seventh day on Wednesday. There are frequent attacks in many major cities including Kharkiv. In 24 hours, 21 people were killed, 112 were injured in the attacks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed that about 6000 Russian soldiers have been killed in the war so far.

Voting took place in the UN General Assembly on Wednesday night on a censure motion against Russia. 141 votes were cast in favor of the proposal and 5 against. 35 countries including India did not participate in the voting. The countries that voted in favor of Russia are Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea and Syria. The non-attendees include India, China, Pakistan, Iraq and Iran.

On the other hand, talks between Ukraine and Russia may start in Poland shortly. The delegations of both the countries have left for the meeting venue. Here, Russia has admitted for the first time that 498 of its soldiers have been killed in the war, while about 1500 have been taken as prisoners.

Citizens of Ukraine are migrating to other countries after the war broke out. Most of the migration took place in Poland, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, Slovakia and Belarus, bordering Ukraine. Surprisingly, more than one lakh people have fled from Russia which has attacked Ukraine.

PM conversation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin a while back. This was the second meeting between the two leaders after the war broke out. It is believed that during this time the safe return of the Indian people was discussed.
