Archerey World Cup 2024: Golden hat-trick, clean sweep in team event

India continued its dominance in non-Olympic compound archery with a clean sweep of the team events and a hat-trick of gold medals in the first phase of the World Cup in Shanghai on Saturday. In this first global tournament of the season, India’s women’s compound team defeated Italy by 236-225. The Indian trio of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Swamy and Preneet Kaur lost only four points in 24 arrows and opened their account with the gold medal by defeating sixth seeded Italy by a huge margin.

In the men’s team, Abhishek Verma, Priyansh and Prathamesh F helped India defeat Netherlands 238-231. The Netherlands team had Mike Schloesser, Sil Pater and Stef Willems. After this, India’s mixed team made a clean sweep by winning the third gold medal in the compound category. Second seeded pair of Jyoti and Abhishek defeated the mixed pair of Lisell Jaatma and Robin Jaatma of Estonia by 158-157 in a thrilling match.

This was a double gold medal for current Asian Games champion Jyothi. She is in the race for the gold medal in the individual event and will play her semi-finals at the end of the day. Priyansh is also in the race for an individual medal in the compound category. The medal rounds in the recurve category will be held on Sunday and India will be eyeing two gold medals in the Olympic category.

The men’s team will face Olympic champion South Korea on Sunday

The Indian men’s team will face Olympic champion South Korea in the gold medal match. Deepika Kumari is in the race for an individual medal and will play her semi-final against her South Korean opponent in the women’s recurve category. The top-seeded women’s compound team lost only four points from 24 arrows in the first match of the day to defeat sixth-seeded Italy.
