Glacial break-off damages power project; water level rises in Chamoli

A portion of the dam of the power project on the Rishiganga river in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand has broken. This has increased the flow in the Alaknanda River. On the information, the district administration and the police team have rushed to the spot. An alert has been sounded in the plains including Rishikesh, Haridwar after the incident.

The water flow of the Alaknanda river has increased unexpectedly due to dam breakdown. No loss of life or property is reported yet, but the administration is on alert mode. A private company has a power project on the Rishiganga River on the policy route beyond Joshimath, where about 24 MW of electricity is produced.

A disaster has been reported from Chamoli district. The district administration, police department and disaster management have been ordered to deal with this disaster. The government has appealed to the people to not to pay attention to any kind of rumors. The government is taking all necessary steps.

Haridwar-Rishikesh on alert

It is being told that a part of the glacier broke from the hill and fell on this dam. Due to this, a part of the dam is damaged and the water of the dam is rapidly flowing into the Alaknanda River. The Central Water Commission has issued an alert at all its posts as the flow of Alaknanda River increases. The arrival of this water in Rishikesh and Haridwar is estimated within 6 to 7 hours.

The dam was damaged by a glacier burst, causing flooding in the Dhauliganga River. The Tapovan Barrage is completely demolished. Many people have been reported missing since the incident. An alert has been sounded due to increasing danger from Chamoli to Haridwar. Police and SDRF teams have started evacuating people along the riverbank along with loudspeaker announcements. Boat rafting operators are also being removed from the Ganges river in Rishikesh.

Taking the matter seriously, the dam water is being reduced to the Srinagar Hydropower Project so that there is no problem in releasing excess water when the water level of Alaknanda rises. The Srinagar police has appealed to the people living in the settlements along the river to move to safer places. Also, laborers working in the river have also been removed.

According to the district Prashan of Chamoli, a lot of damage is being reported due to the glacier burst. Police and SDRF teams have rushed to the spot. Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat is taking information from the Secretary Disaster Management and DM Chamoli at every moment. The Chief Minister can call an emergency meeting of all the officers of Chamoli district along with making an aerial survey of the incident.
