Dehradun: A 26-year-old woman from Venezuela was arrested on Sunday from the Jolly Grant airport for possessing a satellite phone which is illegal to carry or operate in India without required government permissions. The woman, identified as Maria Fernanda Belloso, was initially detained by personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) during security check at the airport while she was in the process of boarding a morning flight to Delhi.

Ram Singh Meena, additional director general of police (ADG), law and order, said that CISF security personnel spotted the satellite phone in her hand baggage when it passed through the scanning machine. “They immediately detained her and informed the police,” he said.

Sleuths from the Intelligence Bureau, Army Intelligence, Special Branch and Local Intelligence Unit thereafter questioned her to find the reason behind carrying the satellite phone in India. Meena said that the woman maintained that she had no malicious intent in bringing the satellite phone in India and was unaware of Indian rules restricting its use. “It has been confirmed that she has not used the phone during her stay in India,” he added.
