Djokovic to face Shapovalov in Shanghai Masters title defense opener

Denis Shapovalov entered the second round of the Shanghai Masters tennis tournament on Monday, defeating Frances Tiafoe 6-4 6-2, where he will face defending champion Novak Djokovic. Shapovalov of Canada (ranked 36th) has played top-ranked Djokovic on two previous occasions and both matches were held this year.

Canada’s Vasek Pospisil defeated 14th seed Argentina’s Schwartzman 7-6 6-2 in the first round. 10th seed Fabio Fognini of Italy did not face much challenge from Sam Querrey of America and won 6-4 6-2. Wildcard entrant and former world number one Andy Murray will face qualifier Juan Ignacio Londero of Argentina. Murray is making a comeback after a career ending hip surgery at the beginning of 2019.

Significantly, the world number one player Djokovic won the Japan Open tennis tournament title on Sunday, addressing all the concerns related to a shoulder injury. Djokovic, who withdrew from the US Open due to a shoulder injury, defeated qualifier Johnn Milman of Australia 6-3, 6-2 in the final.
