Amazon forest fires can have catastrophic consequences says UN official

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet warned on Monday that the fire that was destroying the Amazon rainforests could have a devastating effect on humanity as a whole. In the opening session of the Human Rights Council, Bachelet said that the number of deaths and losses in Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay in recent weeks may never be known, according to the report of the news agency Effe.

Much of Bachelet’s speech was devoted to the climate crisis. A three-week session began with her speech.
