Djokovic returns winning ways in Cincinnati

Novak Djokovic, after getting some relief from neck pain, showed his old complexion by beating American unseeded Tennis Sandgren in straight sets in the Western & Southern Tennis Tournament to take his winning record in 2020 to 20-0.

Djokovic, the world’s number one player, said after winning the match 6–2, 6–4, “Actually the way I felt myself was fit. Not only full fitness, my neck is also much better than before because I was a little worried about it. ‘

Djokovic struggled in the opening round of the first ATP tournament played in the last five months due to Covid-19, but he looked in good rhythm in the second round which is a good sign for him before the US Open starting next week. He has won five Grand Slam tournaments out of the last seven, including the Australian Open played in February this year.

Djokovic will take on 34th-ranked John Lennard Sturf in the quarter-finals. In another quarter-final, defending champion Daniil Medvedev will face eighth seed Roberto Batista Agut.

In other matches American player Reilly Opelka defeated Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 7-6 (4) to advance to the quarter-finals where he would face Stephanos Tsitsipas, who beat John Isner 7-6 (2) 7-6 (4).

Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray suffered defeat. He was defeated 6–2, 6–2 by Milos Raonic. On the other hand, preparing for the US Open starting next week, Serena Williams lost to Maria Sakari in a tough three-set match in the second round of the Western and Southern Open tennis tournament.
