Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II announces her abdication

Denmark’s Queen Margaret II announced her abdication late Sunday night. In her New Year address, she said that she would leave her post on January 14 this month. She will hand over the throne to her son, Crown Prince Frederik André Henrik.

Queen Margrethe II assumed the throne on 14 January 1972 after the death of her father, King Frederick IX. She is leaving this post after 52 years. After Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Margaret II is known as the second longest-reigning monarch in Europe.

Addressing the people, the Queen said – ‘after the back surgery, I got time to think about the future. I started feeling that now the time has come to hand over the responsibilities of the crown to my son. I have decided that January 14, 2024 will be the right time to step down and hand over the responsibility to my son.’

She became the longest-reigning monarch in Europe following the death of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen thanked Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II for her long-term dedication to duty.
