WHO calls emergency meeting on ‘monkeypox virus’

The increasing cases of monkeypox virus in some countries of the world have raised concern. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has called an emergency meeting to discuss the issue. As permedia  reports, the main agenda of the meeting will be to discuss the causes and means of transmission of this virus.

In the beginning of May, cases of monkeypox virus were found in many countries including Britain, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Australia and Canada.

The UK Health Agency confirmed the first case of monkeypox virus in England on 7 May. The infected patient had returned from Nigeria. At the same time, on 18 May, a person was found infected with this virus in America, who had returned after traveling from Canada.

According to scientists, monkeypox is related to the family of smallpox viruses. Although it is not very serious and experts say that the chances of infection are less. Its initial symptoms include fever, headache, swelling, back pain, muscle pain and general lethargy.

Once the fever ends, a rash may develop all over the body. These rashes often start on the face, then spread to other parts of the body, usually the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. Monkeypox can be caused by coming in contact with an infected person.
